Fatal Naming Pattern

Week 12: Loss

There’s a disturbing trend that I noticed while studying my family tree over the years that relates to the use of a specific name. It’s a name that I’m rather fond of – Emmet. But it appears to be tied to unfortunate tragedy.

Photo has some rips and damage to sides and corners, “AT REST” is etched into the top of the photograph with a backward “S” and “1902” is etched onto the lower half of the photograph.

NATHAN EMMET DIXON

My great granduncle was born to Elizabeth Beatrice Rockwell and Nathan Dixon on February 4th, 1902 and died just 7 months later of blood poisoning. His casket photo is seemingly the only photo surviving of him as an infant.

LLOYD EMMET DEAN

My granduncle made it just barely to adulthood. He was born 28 November 1936 in Sherrard, West Virginia to Beatrice Bethel Dixon and Chester Joseph Dean. Almost as if he knew his life was to be a short one on Earth, he got married young at the age of 17 to Jewell Ann Straub on 5 June 1954. And the couple gave birth to a boy, Michael Andrew Dean, just five short months later!

Lloyd went from becoming an adult to becoming a husband to becoming a father all within a span of less than a year. And sadly, that was all that he was to experience of his adult life, as he suddenly passed away when his car was T-boned on 17 July 1955 in Wheeling, West Virginia right in front of the hospital, in fact. He was buried at Halcyon Hills Cemetery. His wife and son were also injured in the crash, but survived. A newspaper account describes the event below.

EMMETT LEE BALES

Daisy Pearl Ruse and David Russell Bales’ boy, my 3rd cousin once removed, had a similarly shortened life, it would seem. He was born in West Virginia in 1937 and according to my records died at the age of 23 in 1960. It’s possible I could have this one incorrect, as there appear to be a few Emmett Lee Bales around this time period that hail from Braxton County. Some day I will need to delve into his life more to be sure.

EMMETT CARL AUFRANC

Finally, this Emmett, also my 3rd cousin once removed, seems to be the luckiest of the bunch. He lived to be 44 years of age, born in 1915 in Missouri and died in 1959. That’s still quite a short life span, though!

So there ya have it!

All 4 men who carried the Emmet or Emmett name in the family perished way too soon. And while it may lean to being rather superstitious, if I were to be asked how to prevent a tragic loss of a loved one occurring in the future, my first response would be to not name that child Emmet!

Just in case…

Patient Zero AKA The First Post

All diseases start somewhere, and the genealogy bug is no exception. I’m Kira Dawn Foltz, and you can think of me as Patient Zero. I’m here to help spread this disorder to the masses (or at least through the branches of my own tree)! And what better way to start the infection, than a history in how I caught the illness. My origin story. The year was 1993. I was 8 years old and in the 4th grade at Calvary Baptist School in Gardena, California, where my father had also attended elementary school (later Calvary Christian Academy, and now home to CrossRoad SouthBay). Mrs. Henken was my teacher. She was also my piano tutor’s wife and a very sweet lady to boot. If only she could have spotted the symptoms back then, who knows in what condition I’d be today! Mrs. Henken assigned us an oral presentation about one of our ancestors. My dad helped me reach out to my Aunt Sandra, the family historian, for information on where we came from. I received a letter from her with a fabulous tale of ...

2025 52 Ancestors: At the Library - First Outing to FamilySearch in Salt Lake City

Every genealogist should eventually make the trek out to SLC to visit the FamilySearch Library (formerly known as the Family History Library). It is open access and free to the public, like a city library, except it is wholly focused on genealogy research materials and managed by the company FamilySearch (founded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). One of the genealogy societies I belong to, Ventura County Genealogical Society ( VCGS ), makes an annual pilgrimage to the library on what they have termed the Salt Lake City Safari. I learned about their trip a couple years ago and felt I'd need to tag along when the schedule made sense for me. 2025 was the year! 2024 52 Ancestors: Cultural Tradition - The Foltz Wedding Anniversary

My paternal grandparents were married on the 9th of April in 1939. It was a Sunday in San Bernardino, California. Harry and Alta (Eggenberger) Foltz, 9 Apr 1939, San Bernardino, California. But it wasn't just any Sunday in April, it happened to be Easter Sunday. They were accompanied by two of their friends from the Pasadena area, where they were living at the time, Jesse E. Chamberlain and A. E. Myers Jr. Jesse was a laundry mangler residing nearby Alta, so I assume they met by chance within their community. Myers and his family ran the restaurant that Harry bartended at on the corner of Orange Grove and Fair Oaks avenues in Pasadena. It appeared to be a very small affair, indeed, as I know Harry's out-of-state mom was not able to be in attendance and I assume the same went for Alta's out-of-state mom, as well, their fathers both having passed away when they were younger. Harry and Alta (Eggenberger) Foltz with marriage witnesses Jesse Chamberlain and A. E. Myers, Jr., 9 A...
